It is famous for its houses and walls of da ong — honey-coloured laterite blocks cut from the local soil — and for keeping the layout of a northern Vietnamese village: a communal house, a pagoda, an old gate, ponds, wells and narrow lanes between family homes. In the mid-2000s Duong Lam became the first ancient village in Vietnam to be recognised as a national historic relic.

The area is made up of several hamlets, with Mong Phu, Dong Sang, Cam Thinh, Doai Giap and Cam Lam forming the old core. Hundreds of traditional houses survive, some of them around 300 years old, with carved wooden frames, tiled roofs and courtyards where families still dry rice and make soy sauce.

The land of two kings

Duong Lam is known in Vietnam as the “land of two kings”: it is the home village of Phung Hung, who led a revolt in the 8th century, and Ngo Quyen, who defeated the Southern Han fleet on the Bach Dang River in 938 and opened the way to independence. Both are honoured at temples in the village area.

What to see in Duong Lam

Start at the old gate of Mong Phu and walk to Mong Phu communal house, built in 1684, one of the finest of its kind in the north. Continue through laterite lanes to open family houses, then to Mia Pagoda, famous for its 287 statues. Along the way, look out for keo che lam and keo doi, the village’s peanut and ginger sweets.

On our full-day Ba Vi jeep tour, we visit Duong Lam in the afternoon after the mountains, walking the laterite lanes, Mong Phu communal house and 300-year-old family homes, then strolling into the rice fields.

Is Duong Lam worth the trip from Hanoi?

Yes, if you enjoy heritage and rural Vietnam. Duong Lam is the country’s first recognised ancient village, 45 to 50 km west of Hanoi, with honey-coloured laterite houses, some around 300 years old, and the classic layout of a northern village – old gate, communal house, pagoda, ponds and lanes. Allow 2 to 3 hours, and because of the distance it works best combined with Ba Vi National Park as a full day.

Una aldea centenaria de piedra laterita rojiza, solemnes casas comunales y pagodas históricas en Son Tay: la primera aldea de Vietnam declarada Monumento Histórico Nacional.

[9
post-184","eta_place","type-eta_place","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry
["GET
