Wooden houses with smoke-darkened roofs sit among some of the most impressive rice terraces in the region, and a path drops through the village to the Muong Hoa stream and on to neighbouring Ta Van.

The Black Hmong are named for their indigo-dyed clothing. In Lao Chai you will see hemp and cotton cloth drying in the sun, women stitching embroidery as they walk, and vats of indigo dye beside the houses. Most families still grow rice on the terraces, along with corn and vegetables, and keep buffalo, pigs and chickens.

A living village, not a museum

Lao Chai has changed with tourism: there are homestays, small shops and women who walk with visitors from Sapa and sell handicrafts along the way. But it remains a farming village, where daily life follows the rice season. Visiting respectfully — staying on paths, asking before photos and buying directly from makers — helps keep it that way.

The Lao Chai to Ta Van walk

The path from Lao Chai down to Ta Van is the most popular village walk in Sapa: about 3–4 km, mostly downhill or flat, along terrace edges, across a bridge over the stream and into the Giay village. It takes around 1–1.5 hours at a relaxed pace.

Lao Chai lies inside the Lao Chai–Ta Van tourist area, and visitors arriving by road usually pass a ticket checkpoint. On our Muong Hoa Valley Jeep tour, the full-day jeep and motorbike tours and the Instagram tour with female riders, you leave the vehicle for an easy walk through Lao Chai towards Ta Van, then stop for coffee by the stream.

Is Lao Chai village worth visiting?

Yes – it is a Black Hmong village set among some of the finest rice terraces in Muong Hoa Valley, about 7 km from Sapa, and the start of the classic valley walk. You will see indigo-dyed cloth drying, women embroidering as they walk, and families farming the terraces.
