The line was built in 1902, during the French colonial period, to carry trains north from Hanoi Railway Station towards Long Bien Bridge and the Red River. It is still a working railway today.

Families of railway workers settled along the tracks from the 1950s, and the homes stand so close to the rails that people cook, wash and chat just a step from the line. When a train is due, everyone pulls in their stools, plants and laundry; a minute later the train has passed and daily life spills back onto the tracks.

Around the late 2010s photos of trains brushing past café tables went viral, and the lane became one of the most photographed places in Vietnam. Small family cafés opened in almost every doorway, serving egg coffee, beer and soft drinks to visitors waiting for the next train.

Train Street in 2025–2026: what has changed

Crowds on the tracks have led to several crackdowns over the years. The street was closed to visitors in October 2019 after a train had to be stopped, and later reopened. In 2025 the city tightened rules for tour groups, and in early 2026 it reduced the number of passenger trains and suspended freight trains through the area.

In practice the lane is still very much alive: families live there, the cafés are open and visitors keep coming every day. Access to individual sections can change and there are fewer trains than before, so it pays to visit with someone who knows the street and the café owners, and to always follow instructions from residents and officials.

Visiting Train Street with Eco Trip Asia

Train Street is a stop on many of our Hanoi tours by vintage jeep, electric scooter and with our female riders. Your guide knows the café owners, checks when the next train is due and finds you a safe seat, so you can relax with a drink and enjoy the moment — we never take guests onto the tracks.

Is Train Street worth visiting in 2026?

Yes. It is one of Hanoi’s most atmospheric corners and it costs nothing to enjoy over a drink at a trackside cafe. There are fewer trains than there once were, and access to individual sections can change from day to day, so the experience is best with someone who knows the current timing and the cafe owners. Plan 30 to 60 minutes, ideally early evening on a weekday, and never stand or walk on the tracks.

[9
post-155","eta_place","type-eta_place","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry
["GET
