The name comes from the three river caves – Hang Ca, Hang Hai and Hang Ba – that the Ngo Dong River runs through on its way between steep limestone hills. Local rowers, many of them women from the villages along the bank, take two passengers at a time in small metal sampans, often rowing with their feet.

The trip is about 2 hours there and back. On the way out the river is lined with rice fields; at the far end the boats turn round and drift back the same way, past fishermen, goats on the rocks and small temples on the bank.

What to see at Tam Coc

The landscape changes with the season. From late May to early June the rice turns gold just before harvest and the river becomes a yellow ribbon – the most photographed moment of the year. In January–March the fields are green and the air is often misty. Tam Coc is part of the wider Trang An Landscape Complex, listed by UNESCO in 2014.

Our full-day Ninh Binh jeep tour includes the Tam Coc boat, with Bich Dong Pagoda, Thai Vi Temple and the Hang Mua viewpoint on the same day.

[18
post-1053","eta_place","type-eta_place","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry
["GET
