Phat Diem Cathedral was built between 1875 and 1899 under the direction of the Vietnamese priest Tran Luc. It is unusual because it looks like a Vietnamese temple: a bell tower with curved roofs, carved stone gates and a long hall held up by dozens of ironwood columns.<\/p>\n
The complex includes the main cathedral, several smaller chapels \u2013 one built entirely of stone \u2013 and a lake in front with a statue on an island.<\/p>\n
The cathedral is still an active church, so dress modestly and keep quiet during services. It is about 45 minutes from Tam Coc by car and makes a good half-day trip for people interested in architecture.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
