After France took control of Hanoi in the 1880s, the colonial government laid out a new grid of streets here, in deliberate contrast to the crowded lanes of the Old Quarter. Over the next fifty years it filled with government offices, banks, villas, hotels, a grand opera house and one notorious prison.

Today the area is home to ministries, embassies, smart hotels and some of the best-preserved colonial architecture in Asia. It is calmer than the Old Quarter, the pavements are wider and the trees are older, which makes it a pleasant place to walk — and a beautiful one to ride through.

Trang Tien Street and the Opera House

Trang Tien Street runs from Hoan Kiem Lake to the Hanoi Opera House, completed in 1911 and inspired by the Palais Garnier in Paris. Along the way are bookshops, art galleries, the Trang Tien Plaza department store and Kem Trang Tien, the ice cream shop every Hanoian knows. Just off the street, the Sofitel Legend Metropole has been welcoming guests since 1901 and is one of the most famous hotels in Southeast Asia.

Hoa Lo Prison and the south

A few blocks west, Hoa Lo Prison was built by the French in 1896 to hold Vietnamese political prisoners; later, American pilots nicknamed it the “Hanoi Hilton”. The remaining part is now a museum and one of the most moving visits in the city.

Phan Dinh Phung Street and Ba Dinh

Further north-west, the French extended their city towards the old citadel. Phan Dinh Phung Street, lined with tall trees and yellow villas, is often called the most beautiful street in Hanoi. It passes Cua Bac Church and the North Gate of the old citadel, and leads towards the Presidential Palace and Ba Dinh Square.

Almost all our Hanoi city tours ride through the French Quarter — by vintage jeep, electric scooter, with our female riders, on e-bikes or on the Instagram tour — and the food tours come back through it at night, when the boulevards are lit up.

Is the Hanoi French Quarter worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you enjoy architecture and a calmer, greener walk than the Old Quarter. Highlights are Trang Tien Street and the Opera House, the century-old Metropole hotel, the moving Hoa Lo Prison museum, and tree-lined Phan Dinh Phung Street, often called the prettiest in Hanoi. It is lovely on foot and even better from a vintage jeep or scooter.

[9
post-173","eta_place","type-eta_place","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry
["GET
