About Phat Diem Cathedral
Phat Diem Cathedral was built between 1875 and 1899 under the direction of the Vietnamese priest Tran Luc. It is unusual because it looks like a Vietnamese temple: a bell tower with curved roofs, carved stone gates and a long hall held up by dozens of ironwood columns.
The complex includes the main cathedral, several smaller chapels – one built entirely of stone – and a lake in front with a statue on an island.
Visiting Phat Diem
The cathedral is still an active church, so dress modestly and keep quiet during services. It is about 45 minutes from Tam Coc by car and makes a good half-day trip for people interested in architecture.
