The short version
Sapa has no airport and no train station of its own, so from Hanoi you take a road vehicle, or a train to Lao Cai and then a 35 km transfer up the mountain. It is about 320 km and you have four realistic choices.
- Most popular: a limousine van, door to door in about 5.5–6 hours for roughly 320,000–450,000 VND (US$13–18).
- Most atmospheric: the overnight train to Lao Cai, then a shuttle to Sapa – 8–9 hours in all, from about US$22.
- Cheapest overnight: a sleeper bus – but it often arrives around dawn, before hotels check you in.
- Most flexible: a private car for a group, about US$130–180 for up to four.
How far is Sapa from Hanoi?
Sapa is about 320 km north-west of Hanoi, in the mountains of Lao Cai province near the Chinese border. Most of the drive is on the modern Noi Bai–Lao Cai Expressway, which is why a van now does it in around 5.5–6 hours. The last stretch from Lao Cai city up to Sapa town (about 35 km) is a winding mountain road that takes roughly an hour. There is no direct flight or train into Sapa itself – the nearest station is in Lao Cai.
Hanoi to Sapa: your options compared
| Option | Price (one way, 2026) | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limousine van (9-seat) | 320,000–450,000 VND (US$13–18) | 5.5–6 hrs | Most travellers; daytime arrival |
| Sleeper / VIP cabin bus | About US$12–20 | ~6 hrs (overnight) | Budget; saving a night’s hotel |
| Overnight train to Lao Cai + transfer | US$22–32 (state) / US$45–65 (private cabin) | 8–9 hrs total | A romantic, nostalgic journey |
| Private car | US$130–180 (up to 4 people) | 5–5.5 hrs | Groups, door to door, your own schedule |
Limousine van: the popular choice
A “limousine” here means a comfortable 9-seat minivan with reclining seats, not a stretch car. It is the fastest and best-value way to Sapa, running day and night and usually offering hotel pickup in central Hanoi and a drop in central Sapa. Operators such as Sapa Express, Interbus Lines and Green Bus run frequent departures; book a day or two ahead in peak season (autumn and holidays). Expect about 320,000–450,000 VND (US$13–18) one way and a journey of 5.5–6 hours with one rest stop.
Sleeper and VIP cabin buses
Overnight sleeper buses are the cheapest way up, with flat berths or private pod cabins and a fare around US$12–20. The catch is timing: a night bus often reaches Sapa around 04:00–06:00, before hotels will check you in, so you can end up waiting in the cold. If you take one, ask the operator about a late-morning check-in or a daytime departure instead.
The overnight train to Lao Cai
The classic way is the night train from Hanoi to Lao Cai, then a road transfer up to Sapa. It is slower overall but a genuinely atmospheric trip, and you sleep as you travel.
- Departs: Hanoi Railway Station in the evening (trains such as SP3 around 22:00 and SP1 around 21:35).
- Boarding side: trains to Lao Cai use the Tran Quy Cap side of Hanoi Railway Station, not the main Le Duan entrance – check the gate printed on your ticket.
- Arrives: Lao Cai around 05:30–06:10, then a 35 km shuttle or taxi (about an hour) up to Sapa town.
- Cabins: state-railway sleepers cost about US$22–32; plush private cabins run by operators such as Chapa, Sapaly or Victoria cost about US$45–65.
- Booking: state tickets through Vietnam Railways (dsvn.vn) or an agent; private cabins through the operator.
Private car
A private car with a driver is the most flexible option: door to door in about 5–5.5 hours, your own schedule, and room to stop for photos. It costs roughly US$130–180 for a car seating up to four, which can work out reasonable for a small group and is the easiest with lots of luggage or young children.
Which should you choose?
- First-time visitors and families: a daytime limousine van – fast, good value, and you see the scenery.
- A romantic or nostalgic trip: the overnight train, ideally a private cabin.
- Tight budget: a sleeper bus, accepting the early arrival.
- Groups of three or four, or lots of luggage: a private car.
Motion sickness and the mountain road
The expressway is smooth, but the final climb from Lao Cai to Sapa is a winding mountain road where travel sickness can catch people out. If you are prone to it:
- Take motion-sickness medicine before the last stretch, not after you feel unwell.
- Sit towards the front and look at the horizon, not your phone.
- Keep water and a few plain snacks handy, and ask for a window seat.
Arriving in Sapa and your tour with us
Our Sapa tours – the full-day jeep tour, the Muong Hoa Valley jeep tour and the female-rider motorbike tours – all start and finish at Sapa Stone Church in the town centre, with pickup from central Sapa hotels on request. They do not include transport from Hanoi, so book your bus, train or car separately and leave a comfortable margin: if you are arriving on the morning of a tour, an early van or the night train can work, but arriving the day before is far less stressful. Frequently asked questions
How do I get from Hanoi to Sapa?
Sapa has no airport or train station, so from Hanoi you take a road vehicle or a train to Lao Cai plus a transfer. The four options are a limousine van (5.5–6 hours, US$13–18), an overnight sleeper bus (around US$12–20), the overnight train to Lao Cai then a 35 km shuttle (8–9 hours total, from US$22), or a private car (US$130–180 for up to four).
How far is Sapa from Hanoi and how long does it take?
Sapa is about 320 km north-west of Hanoi. A limousine van takes 5.5–6 hours on the Noi Bai–Lao Cai Expressway; the overnight train plus the transfer up the mountain takes 8–9 hours in all. A private car is about 5–5.5 hours.
Is there a train directly to Sapa?
No. There is no station in Sapa. The night train runs from Hanoi to Lao Cai, and from there it is a 35 km road transfer (about an hour) up the mountain to Sapa town. Many travellers book the train and the transfer together.
Which Hanoi station do Sapa (Lao Cai) trains leave from?
They leave from Hanoi Railway Station, but trains to Lao Cai use the Tran Quy Cap side of the station rather than the main entrance on Le Duan Street. Check the gate printed on your ticket and allow time to find the right entrance.
How much is the Hanoi to Sapa limousine van?
A 9-seat limousine van costs about 320,000–450,000 VND (US$13–18) one way, with frequent day and night departures and usually hotel pickup in central Hanoi and a drop in central Sapa. Book a day or two ahead in autumn and over holidays.
How much is the Hanoi to Sapa train?
State-railway sleeper berths to Lao Cai cost about US$22–32 one way; plush private cabins run by operators such as Chapa, Sapaly or Victoria cost about US$45–65. Add the 35 km transfer from Lao Cai up to Sapa, which is often sold with the ticket.
Is the bus or the train better for Hanoi to Sapa?
The limousine van is the fastest and best value and lets you travel by day. The train is slower and needs a transfer, but it is the atmospheric, sleep-as-you-go option. Cheap sleeper buses save a night's hotel but often arrive around dawn, before check-in, so weigh that in.
What is the best way to get to Sapa for first-timers or families?
A daytime limousine van is the easiest: fast, good value, door to door, and you see the mountain scenery on the way. For three or four people or lots of luggage, a private car can be just as convenient and not much more per person.
Does the Sapa tour include transport from Hanoi?
No. Our Sapa jeep and motorbike tours start and finish at Sapa Stone Church in the town centre and do not include transport from Hanoi. Book your van, train or car separately, and ideally arrive the day before your tour so the schedule is relaxed.
How do I avoid motion sickness on the way to Sapa?
The expressway is smooth, but the last hour from Lao Cai up to Sapa is winding. Take motion-sickness medicine before that final stretch rather than after you feel unwell, sit towards the front, look at the horizon instead of your phone, and keep water and plain snacks handy.
Can I visit Sapa as a day trip from Hanoi?
Not comfortably. At about 320 km and 5.5–6 hours each way, Sapa is really an overnight or multi-day destination. Plan at least one or two nights so you have time for the rice terraces and villages without spending the whole trip travelling.
